Lyme disease is an infection caused by Borrelia bacteria and is most commonly transmitted through the bite of an infected blacklegged tick. Early symptoms can include fatigue, headache, fever, muscle or joint aches, and sometimes a bull’s-eye–type rash, although not everyone develops a rash or remembers being bitten. Because ticks can also carry other organisms, symptoms following a tick exposure can vary from person to person. Recognizing possible exposure and symptoms early can help guide appropriate evaluation and next steps.
